Credentials

Laura Broughton holds the Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees.  She received Permanent Professional Certification in Piano from Music Teachers National Association, and is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM).  She was chosen from among several hundred applicants to participate in the prestigious National Association of Teachers of Singing Intern Program for early-career voice teachers, and is also published in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, widely acclaimed as the most comprehensive encyclopedic music dictionary in the English language.  She has previously served terms on the state board of the Mississippi Music Teachers Association, and most recently ended her term as Independent Music Teachers Forum Chair.  Active in the Hattiesburg Music Teachers League, she has served three terms as president and is the immediate past Publicity Chair.  She continues to serve as the Spring Concert Chair, and is currently the 2025 Composer Festival Chair, having chaired a number of previous composer festivals.

She enthusiastically shares her passion for the universal language of music by teaching students of all ages, from 4-year-olds to retirees.  As a church musician, she sings in her church choir and as a soloist, and plays frequently as a substitute pianist at area churches.  Additionally, she has performed as a vocal soloist and pianist at many weddings.  Her students earn high ratings at area music festivals, and regularly receive awards as winners and finalists in state music competitions.  She has also served as an adjudicator at music competitions out of state.  When not involved in music activities, she enjoys traveling, baking, reading and is a linguaphile.
